The Date That Can Make Your Relationship Stronger

You might want to invite another set of lovebirds along on your next date night: Couples who go on double dates feel closer and more satisfied with their relationships, according to a new study to be presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology conference.

For this two-part study, researchers recruited 150 couples to see how interactions with other romantic pairs affected their relationship. When pairs discussed details about their personal lives with another couple, they felt happier about their relationships. Those blissful feelings increased even more when the other couple also responded positively to stories – like offering sympathetic and/or understanding comments about a dispute.

While this particular study didn’t test whether opening up to other people (like parents or friends) yielded similar results, getting supportive feedback from others can definitely make you feel validated in your relationship, says lead study author Keith Welker, a graduate student in the department of psychology at Wayne State University.

If you want to boost your bond with a double date, Welker suggests inviting another twosome over for dinner; home-cooked meals offer a better setting for intimate conversation than noisy restaurants.
