It’s been one big week for Lira, the South African afro-soul singer was invited to perform at Barack Obama’s inauguration and the opening ceremony of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in Soweto.

She was shortlisted from a number of African musicians and is to perform at US President Barack Obama’s inauguration ball in Washington DC on Monday.

And speaking of presidents? Lira also performed for former South African president and civil rights leader Nelson Mandela’s 92nd birthday.

Lira has chosen to play Obama a song that she has previously performed for a president: “Something Inside So Strong,” by Labi Siffre.

“I played that song for (former South African) president Mandela in 2010; it was his favourite song when he was still incarcerated.”
