One woman says it’s all about the hashtags…

A new study shows that people who used Instagram as a photo food diary ate healthier and stuck to their goals. The reasons: followers hold you accountable, while a grid of pics shows you a snapshot of your diet. In fact, Kathleen Vuong (@whatkateats) lost five kilograms after starting a #fooddiary account. Here’s her advice on using Instagram as part of your slim-down plan:

1. Be detailed

Instead of “Awesome lunch today!” write “Spicy salmon and fish roe salad for lunch with an iced jasmine green tea.” Specific captions help you remember (and re-create) meals.

2. Go pretty

“I’ll make and eat healthy foods, like a colourful salad, because veggies will photograph better than a ham and cheese sandwich,” Vuong says. “They usually get more likes, so it’s positive reinforcement.”

3. Use hashtags

Searching ones like #healthyeats helped Vuong find nutritious meal inspiration, and including them on her own posts drove traffic to her feed.
