REVIEW: New Balance FuelCell Rebel V5 Running Shoes

by | Sep 8, 2025 | Tech & Gear

The search for an everyday running shoe has never been more involved. From the number of factors to take into account (Weight! Heel drop! Support!) to whether or not it’ll match your running aesthetic (it exists!), there’s a lot to consider. So when given the chance to review the new New Balance FuelCell Rebel V5, we rejoiced.

This new addition to the everyday running shoe stable, the FuelCell Rebel V5 stands out as a versatile and lightweight road running shoe that bridges the gap between comfort and performance. Building on the strengths of its predecessor, the Rebel V4, this version enhances cushioning, fit and ride quality, making it suitable for a variety of runs ranging from recovery and easy runs to tempo sessions and intervals.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel V5: The Low-Down

From the base, the Rebel V5 is made with New Balance’s signature FuelCell midsole foam, a blend of EVA and PEBA, known for its plush softness combined with great energy return. An increased stack height compared to the previous model (35 mm heel, 29 mm forefoot) means extra comfort for longer runs, which reduces fatigue but holds onto that agility.

The upper uses engineered mesh with FantomFit construction, which provides a fitted yet breathable environment for the foot. An improved heel collar and padded tongue enhance comfort and lockdown, while the shoe maintains an overall lightweight feel at about 220g.

What Makes It Special?

What truly distinguishes the FuelCell Rebel V5 is its ability to serve as a do-it-all running shoe with a soft but responsive ride. It caters especially well to midfoot and forefoot strikers, offering a grounded yet cushioned feel that encourages a natural running gait.

Unlike more maximalist trainers, the Rebel V5 manages to maintain considerable flexibility and lightness. Its midsole softness absorbs shocks effectively during longer runs, while its geometry allows for smooth transitions and a snappy toe-off. While it doesn’t have a carbon plate like many racing shoes these days, you won’t miss it. Think: a more fluid and fun ride for everyday use.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel V5 Review

By Michelle October, WH features editor

Sometimes I love nothing more than a speedy, furious run. Other days, my legs feel heavy enough without any help from my shoes. So when I took my first steps in the new FuelCell Rebel V5, I was giddy with surprise. The shoe felt extremely springy; every toe-off got handed back to me – and then some. The shoe’s rocker does wonders, especially for my reluctant legs, forcing my foot forward. Within the first ten seconds, it felt like my shoes were egging me on, no guided run or playlist necessary.

I tried the kicks on a steep flight of stairs first, and they tackled it with ease, although a little wobble in the ankle told me that if you’re a pronator or supinator, beware. While there’s a slightly wide toe box and support in the forefoot’s sole, the stack height and bounce might feel unstable for some. Still, I took it from the stairs to a hill climb, and it felt incredibly light and speedy. To me, it’s a great trainer for when you’re just about ready to get a bit more serious about running – a reliable runner that’s not afraid of any challenge.
