Looking for somewhere to reconnect with yourself, your loved ones or nature? Cederberg Park Kromrivier is the kind of place that makes you want to switch off your phone, lace up your hiking boots and breathe deeper.

Tucked away in the Cederberg Mountains, this luxury self-catering escape pairs crisp mountain air with adventure on tap – think secret rock pools, starlit skies and trails that lead you to views you’ll replay in your mind for months.

Whether you’re chasing a fitness challenge, planning a girls’ getaway or simply craving a reset, this is the wilderness with a touch of indulgence.

Getting There:

From Cape Town, take the N7 towards Citrusdal. About 27km past town, turn off at the Algeria/Cederberg sign and follow a gravel road for roughly 57km (Find the Google Maps link here) before taking the Cederberg Park Kromrivier turn to the right.

The final stretch is bumpy – best in a 4×4 – but doable in a regular car (you might just feel it in your arms). The Mars-like scenery makes every bump worth it. Fuel up before leaving the N7, as there are no petrol stations nearby.

When To Visit:

  • August-October: Wildflower season – the valleys explode with colour.
  • November-February: Best for swimming and long days outdoors, but start hikes early to avoid the midday heat.
  • May-July: Crisp mornings, cosy fireside evenings and crystal-clear night skies for stargazing.

Where You’ll Be Staying:

Chalet Bedroom

After a long day exploring the area, your luxury self-catering chalet becomes a sanctuary. Each of the 10 units have two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms (and a sleeper couch to sleep max. 6 people), fully equipped kitchen, inside and outside braai, and a fireplace for chilly evenings – with some in the bedrooms for extra cosiness. The décor is modern yet warm, with huge windows framing the mountain backdrop. There’s no TV here – just the hush of the mountains and the crackle of the fire.

Fancy yourself a remote worker or simply need a change of scenery? Your chalet comes with Wi-Fi and a desk so you can log on, tick off your to-do list, then make the most of the hours before and after work and explore.

Prefer something different? Choose a safari-style tented camp or one of the 18 power-equipped campsite plots (maximum 8 per plot). Either way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views and a front-row seat to the quiet beauty of the Cederberg.

Eating And Drinking

On-site restaurant  Die Slee is the social heart of the farm, where guests sip, snack and laugh the afternoon away. The menu delivers on flavour and flair – think gourmet burgers, wood-fired pizzas, fresh salads and NieuwBrew craft beer  – the first microbrewery in the Cederberg – brewed right there. We recommend trying the Sarie Marais – a Cherry Blonde that’ll impress even non-beer drinkers.

For somewhere so remote, the quality is mindblowingly good, with dishes that honour South African ingredients and flavours. Grab a seat outdoors for golden-hour views or linger by the fire when the evenings turn cool. Don’t leave without trying the Bacon Gouda Burger, Pulled BBQ Steak Sandwich or hearty Waterblommetjie Bredie (Find the menu here).

The small farm stall stocks freshly baked bread, cold drinks, Kromrivier wine (the Tempranillo is a must), braai staples and local treats – perfect for topping up supplies when you’re self-catering.

The Activities

Cederberg Park Kromrivier is a playground for active travellers. This area is famed for its hikes but the mountain biking, horse riding and trail running routes criss-cross the area and provide unparalleled beauty. Night-time offers some incredibly clear stargazing.

And the health and wellness benefits are endless. Hiking here isn’t just scenic – it’s a cardio workout that will strengthen your legs and core while lowering those stress hormones. Cool off with a dip in a mountain pool for nature’s version of an ice bath, shown to ease muscle soreness and boost recovery. And with patchy reception, the digital detox comes easy – research shows that time in green spaces improves mood, focus and mental clarity.

Hiking

The Disa Pool Trail

If you do one hike, make it Disa Pool (free if you’re staying there and R50 for day visitors). This moderate 3-4 hour return trail follows a winding river through fynbos valleys before arriving at a waterfall that feeds a crystal-clear pool – perfect for a summer swim.

From late December to February, bright pink Disa orchids bloom along the water’s edge, turning the whole scene into a postcard. It’s a trail that rewards both effort and pause: climb the rocks for a panoramic view, then stretch out on the smooth sandstone with your feet in the water. Find the Alltrails route here.

Farmyard Fun

Feeding The Calves

Join the morning feed, help milk the cows or spend time with the lambs and goats. Kids will love the restored water mill, but it’s not just for little ones – milking the cows was a surprise highlight of our girls’ trip. There’s something deeply restorative about getting hands-on with a slice of farm life you don’t encounter every day.

Trail Running

The Cederberg’s dramatic landscapes are a dream for runners. Official marked routes on Kromrivier are in the works, but there’s no shortage of wild paths to explore.
