Itching to experiment with make-up? Picture your best make-up look. Now, imagine it with one bold element to it. Whether it’s bold lip or eyeshadow, it’s going to be a statement for sure. Here, the new make-up trends and exactly how to achieve them.
Make-up trend #1: Foil-flecked + red lips
Steps
1/ Apply your base
Smooth on a blurring primer (fact: it’s what makes skin look airbrushed). Then take a long-wear matte foundation and buff it everywhere, including your lids. It’s every pro’s trick for getting rid of discolouration and keeping excess oil in check.
2/ Get foil flecked
Your primer and foundation will hold your gold into place. Use a glitter shadow with a damp brush. Or if you really want that crinkle look, try a gold leaf foil (get this from a craft shop). Wearing cotton gloves, gently pinch the sheet. Use washi tape to do the outline of your wing and lift stray flecks.
3/ Add a lotta lip
The iconic red pout is back (after years of masking the lip) and is on the trends list for 2023 – glossy and bolder! Prep your lips by exfoliating with a sugar-based scrub or damp washcloth (flaky lips are this lewk’s forever enemy). Then swipe on your favourite red lipstick.
Make-Up Trend #2: Clean look + dramatic wing
Steps
1/ Get all dewy
Choose a sheer liquid foundation to show off the natural quality of the skin. Blend it evenly on your face. Then add a little warmth by dusting bronzer on your cheeks and cheekbones.
2/ Get dramatic eyes
The good news is that the graphic eyeliner doesn’t require the precision of a surgeon. Quick prep work requires an eyeshadow primer – locks in your shadow colour to help it resist smudging. Starting at your inner eye crease, slowly (we repeat, slooowly) draw an arc that stops just past where your eyebrow ends. Then create a straight line that connects the end of the arc to the outer corner of your eye. Do this using an angled liner brush and a dark eyeshadow. Then colour with a black cream base (so the powder doesn’t shift). Finish with a dark volumizing and lengthening mascara, et voila! Bold, dramatic eyes.
PRO TIP: Set aside a Q-tip soaked in makeup remover for fixes
3/ Get barely-there lips
A nude lip is simple but elevated and it can really pull a look together. Of course, not all nudes are created equal: there are different shades and finishes.
Make-up trend #3: Glossy lips + natural make-up
Steps
1/ Prep your skin
The vibe here is natural, so use a tinted moisturizer and a concealer, if you need one. (If you don’t own tinted moisturizer, just mix your foundation with moisturizer to sheer it out.)
2/ Make it shine
Using your fingers, apply a creamy pearl highlighter (it’ll melt into your skin better than a powder) onto the high points of your face—cheekbones, brow bones, the bridge of your nose, and above your Cupid’s bow.
3/ Give yourself a flush
Apply some subtle blush on your cheekbones and the bridge of your nose.
4/ Finish with gloss
Dab some over your lips for a super-shiny finish. For sheen up top, take a teensy bit more gloss and tap it on your eyelid creases, being careful to keep it away from your liner to avoid smearing.
