“I Went To FIBO — The Fitness Boom Global Fitness Expo — Last Year And This Is What It Was Like”

The FIBO (Fitness Boom) Global Fitness Expo is back in Johannesburg for another three days of awesome fitness, diet and wellness experiences! If you haven’t yet heard about it, or you’ve never been to one, here’s a bit of background.

FIBO is a global fitness expo that came to South Africa for the first time in 2018, and it’s three days of what we like to call “fitness and nutrition heaven”. Whether you’ve dedicated your whole life to fitness and nutrition, or you just have a curious and keen leaning towards it, the expo is designed to accommodate and educate everyone.

What to expect

Just to give you a small glimpse into the vibe you can expect, we spoke to Gotlhokwang Angoma-Mzini, who attended the expo last year and asked dish on what she experienced.

“Upon arrival, I received a bag to carry so that I could fill it up with goodies from health, wellness and fitness stands and I left with tons of wellness swag,” Gotlhokwang says. “Everyone at the different stands was so friendly and helpful – I got to try a lot of stuff out.” To say it plainly, Gotlhokwang felt that the space as a whole was filled with positive ‘vaaabs’!

“Will I fit in?”

We all know that any space dedicated to healthy living and fitness can be an intimidating one to find yourself in. “Oh my belly is too big, all the fitness junkies will judge me.” Or… “It’s so obvious that I’m not a regular gym-goer, I’m going to stand out like a sore, unhealthy thumb.” These are just some of the things we say to ourselves before we make the decision not to go to ‘protect our peace’. But Gotlhokwang experienced quite the opposite.

“There was such a healthy mix of people. There were people you could tell go to CrossFit twice a day, every day and there were the regular Frans, Dianes and Annies. Some people used walking to get their bout of activity in,” she says.

While stalls and fitness activations are happening, there are also talks you can attend and this is where Gotlhokwang spent most of her time.

“Unfortunately by the time I was done with the talks, most of the fitness classes were finished,” she says.

“But I was lucky enough to peruse past a step class and yes, every type of body was partaking and this particular class had progressive moves. As I said, I didn’t see much of the exercises, but the space was huge and there was a wide selection of exercises – from bounce to cycling, to trampolining.”

“What will I learn?”

At the expo, Gotlhokwang learned about the fitness trends happening globally, how tech and digital are affecting the wellness and health sector and how to keep your business fit.

Her one piece of advice for anyone going? “Go with a friend or friends so you can spread out and do more than one day of the expo – there is tons to do!”

The good news from us is that if you were at Fit Night Out (FNO) Johannesburg on 17 August, you get in to FIBO for free! The ticket to the expo is in the goodie bag you received at FNO, and if you still have it, then there’s absolutely no reason to miss South Africa’s biggest fitness expo.

If you weren’t at FNO (you missed out!), you can get your ticket to FIBO here.

FIBO Global Fitness Expo will be happening at the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg from 25-27 October.
