5 Fuel-Efficient Cars For Your Next Road Trip

by | Nov 13, 2023 | Motoring

Who doesn’t love hitting the open road en route to a holiday destination? With December approaching faster than a freight train, we need to get our road trip plans locked down. But while we might all love the thought of a fun-filled road trip, we can’t help but worry about the ever-increasing fuel costs and what this means for our holiday plans. So I have put together five cars that are some of the most fuel-efficient on our market but still offer enough comfort for an epic adventure.

1. Suzuki Fronx

Fuel Consumption: 5.5l/100 km | Price From: R279 900

Suzuki offers the highest number of fuel-efficient petrol cars in South Africa. This comes down to most of their products being rather compact. This list would not be complete without a Suzuki model. And the chosen one is the Fronx. Not only does it sip minimal fuel, but it is spacious and offers some of the best value for money on the market. If only we could change its name!

2. Volkswagen Polo Vivi GT

Fuel Consumption: 4.6l/100 km | Price From: R341 800

The Polo really has stood the test of time, it offers one of the best resale values on the market. It feels solid on the road and is comfortable enough for a couple of friends to go away in. The Vivo is more budget-friendly than the standard Polo, but this doesn’t mean it skimps on features. And the GT model is certainly the one to go for in terms of extra street cred.

3. Fiat 500 Dolce Vita

Fuel Consumption: 4.0l/100 km | Price From: R371 900

This may be a dinky little thing, but if it is just you and your bestie, you don’t need more space than what the Fiat 500 offers. And it is probably the most fun you will have. Especially in Dolce Vita guise. Put the top down and feel the sun on your face as you head to your holiday destination. No worrying about how much it will cost to get you there with this ridiculously low fuel consumption figure.

4. Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid

Fuel Consumption: 4.6l/100 km | Price From: R489 100

We couldn’t leave a hybrid off this list, especially when it comes in the form of one of the best cars on our roads, the Toyota Corolla Cross. This car offers oodles of space, a host of features and best of all, a teeny tiny fuel consumption. It also has one of the most loved and trusted badges on the front which bodes well when you’re heading on a long trip. Especially as this means you will almost always be able to find a Toyota dealership if you need.

Mercedes-Benz A200 D

Fuel Consumption: 4.5l/100 km | Price From: R919 995

This is the priciest of the lot due to it sporting a premium badge, it is also the only diesel model, but we like to cater for everyone here. The A-Class is going to take you where you want to go, in style! And although that style might set you back a bit in terms of price, the fuel consumption won’t. The turbodiesel under the bonnet sips a mere 4.5l/100 km.
