We all know that skin conditions can become unpleasant to deal with resulting in your self-confidence takes a knock. Which is why we thought you should hear about how one woman turned her vitiligo into a work of art?
Make-up artist, Lauren Elyse is using her skin disease as an inspiration for other women with vitiligo who are battling with self-confidence.
What is Vitiligo?
It’s a rare condition that occurs when the skin’s melanin either dies or stops functioning. It can happen on any part of the body. The direct cause of vitiligo is still unknown, but it can run families, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It attacks the cells that add colour to the skin, but the condition is not contagious or life-threatening.
Vitiligo leaves noticeably lighter patches in certain areas of the body and occurs equally amongst all races and sexes, but it is most noticeable on darker skin tones. Whilst there are treatment options for vitiligo, such as prescribed steroids, but they can’t cure the disease.

Lauren has two white patches around both of her eyes and a smaller mark between her brows. However, you won’t find her hiding these patches but rather proudly flaunting her vitiligo with cool make-up creations. From exciting cut creases to double-winged eyeliner, which perfectly frames her balanced spots. And, why not?

However, she admits that seeing the beauty in her skin condition hasn’t been easy. “At first, it was really hard for me to get used to it because I wasn’t in a confident place”. The condition started off on her knees only but it later spread to her face. “I thought the spots on my face would take away from my looks, but now I think it adds to it,” Elyse said.”
What We Love About This?
Her example of self-love will help and encourage so many other women to feel more confident about their condition. Adding to the fact that beauty comes in many different forms not just one. “I didn’t have anybody to look up to when I was a kid,” Elyse explained. “And I love being a source of inspiration for people.”
