It’s the year 2020, and so much has changed in the world of pageants — that’s a big deal if you know pageant history. At the Miss Universe pageant last year, our very own Zozi Tunzi spoke about how conventional beauty standards haven’t typically included skin and hair like hers, encouraging women to embrace themselves and love who they are.
The idea of beauty has certainly shifted and the Miss South Africa 2020 pageant epitomizes that. Our prestigious Miss South Africa pageant returns this year and entries are now open for the women of South Africa to enter. It’s no secret that as a nation, we have a plethora of inspiring and talented women. Our country has certainly shown the world what beauty with a purpose really means.
The evolution of pageants
Beauty pageants have changed the way they are being perceived worldwide. Gone are the days of pageants only being about the catwalk, but they now symbolise a life-time opportunity for young women to become ambassadors for their own countries.

What Miss South Africa represents
This year, Miss South Africa is transforming the meaning of pageantry and beauty. The pageant has taken the phrase, “Face your Power! Embrace your Future!” to another level. Inclusivity is the operative word this year! The organisation wants to embrace the authenticity of every woman in South Africa while continuing with the Miss South Africa brand pillars: empowerment, duty, and championship. The Miss South Africa pageant is a leading voice for female empowerment and social change.

Are you South Africa’s next ambassador?
As part of your entry requirements this year, you will need:
- A natural image of yourself. There will be no need for professional pictures this year, so submit a photo of yourself where you feel good about yourself.
- A video submission. Take a selfie intro video no longer than 45 seconds. Post the video on social media (a permanent timeline post) on either Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Use the #MissSA2020 hashtag and tag Miss SA in the post itself. Entries will be closing at 11:59 PM on the 31st of May 2020.
- Age requirements. You must be at least 20 years old and must be under 28 years of age as 1 August 2020.
- Height requirements. There are no height requirements.
- Modelling experience requirements? No modelling experience or training is required for you to enter the pageant.
- Visible tattoos or piercings. There are no restrictions on tattoos and piercings this year
- What nationalities can enter? Miss SA entrants must be South African citizens with a South African passport or ID book. If you possess dual citizenship, you must provide both upon entry.

1/Jo-Ann Strauss (Miss South Africa 2000)
The accomplished television personality and businesswoman became the first South African celebrity to appear on the cover of Women’s Health magazine in June 2010.
2/ Melinda Bam (Miss South Africa 2011)
Television personality and businesswoman, Melinda Bam graced the December 2012 and March 2018 covers.
3/ Rolene Strauss (Miss South Africa 2014 and Miss World 2014)
Businesswoman, a medical doctor and author Rolene Strauss was our August 2019 cover star.
4/ Liesl Laurie (Miss South Africa 2015)
Radio personality, Liesl Laurie became our March 2020 cover star and she’s currently the Women’s Health Netherlands July 2020 cover star.
5/ Demi-Leigh Tebow (Miss South Africa 2012 and Miss Universe 2017)
