We know what you’re thinking: another pair of running shoes? Sure, it feels like a new running shoe drops every week – promising to make you (almost) as fast as Caster Semenya. But hear us out: finding the best new running shoe for your needs can seriously level up your training.
Not only that, but running shoes are meant to be replaced regularly (around every 650km – 800km), to protect the health of your feet. So we’ve scoped (and tested) the latest releases to bring you the newest running shoe drops in 2025 (so far), along with how they’ll support your next PB.
What To Look For In Running Shoes For Women
- Cushioning: This helps the ground feel softer underfoot and encourages ground-contact stability.
- Weight: Lighter shoes typically have less cushioning, giving an increased rebound off the ground. They’re designed for speedy splits and powerful runs. For longer distances, choose heavier shoes with more cushioning.
- Drop: This is the difference in the cushioning level from the rear foot to the forefoot. The lower the drop, the more conducive the shoe is for a speedy running style. Speed shoes will tend to have around a 4mm drop.

The Best Road Running Shoes For 2025
Reebok FloatZig 1
Best For: Beginners

A versatile, everyday trainer built for pretty much any kind of runner. The FloatZig 1 combines a breathable mesh upper, lightweight cushioning and a springy forefoot that makes it ideal for both training runs and casual wear. Whether you’re heading out for an easy 5K or just running errands, this one’s designed to keep up.
Pros:
✅ Light and responsive
✅ Bold zig-zag midsole gives plenty of pop
Cons:
❌ Less stable on tight turns due to its lightweight build
WH Tests It:
“This is by far the best shoe for anyone looking to get into running or return to it after a break. The zig-zag design isn’t just eye-catching – it’s got serious performance too, with a springy feel that pushes you forward on daily runs. As soon as you put them on, they’re incredibly comfortable and make the transition into running feel easier, without any aches or joint niggles.” Tested by Chamain van Zyl, Online Editor.
New Balance FuelCell Rebel V5
Best For: Everyday runs

The FuelCell Rebel shoe is an everyday trainer made to be versatile while keeping you in competitive shape. The Rebel V5 is made with New Balance’s signature FuelCell midsole foam – a blend of EVA and PEBA – which provides a soft feeling underfoot with major energy return. There’s a higher stack height on V5 of the Rebel, to create more cushioning for longer distance runs.
Pros:
✅ Very bouncy
✅ Propulsive feel
✅ Max cushioning for long distances
✅ Incredibly lightweight
Cons:
❌ Lacks stability in the ankles
❌ Runs small; not a lot of stretch
WH Tests It
From first slipping on these sneakers, the FuelCell foam feels simultaneously soft and plush while being very bouncy. The pronounced rocker – sans carbon plate – almost begs you to pick up the speed, making it a great shoe for speed work, especially when combined with the incredibly light feel of the shoe. The toe box is supported by a wider sole in front, which levels out that insane bounce from the heel through to forefoot. This means you’re supported well on the incline and during speedwork, especially if you’re a forefoot striker.
I have a bit of supination and unsteady ankles and felt mostly well-supported throughout the run. However, when sprinting downhill, I felt the heel of the shoe buckle slightly under the cushy stacked height. Still, it’s an incredibly fun shoe, one I’ve reached for above my others of late, especially for its lightweight feel and major energy return. Tested by Michelle October, Features Editor.

Asics Gel Nimbus 27
Best For: Long, cushy runs and recovery runs

Think of this as your cloud-like daily trainer. The Gel-Nimbus 27 is built for comfort, with plush cushioning that soaks up impact and makes those kilometres feel easier on your joints. It’s a little on the heavier side, so you won’t be breaking speed records, but if you’re looking for a shoe that helps you actually enjoy running from the get-go, this one delivers.
Pros:
✅ Ultra-cushioned
✅ Great for long or easy runs
Cons:
❌ Heavier
❌ Less responsive for speed
WH Tests It:
“The Gel Nimbus is the shoe that made me fall in love with running back in 2023. It truly feels like running on clouds and this version is softer and more cushioned than ever. I overpronate so I grab my Gel-Kayano’s more often now, but I’m excited to run in these whenever I reach for them – you just won’t get as comfortable a run with any other shoe.” Tested by Kelleigh Korevaar, Managing Editor.
On Cloudeclipse
Best For: Soft landings

Designed to handle any distance at any pace, experience the perfect balance between cushioning and responsiveness. By utilising Helion superfoam and CloudTec Phase technology, the On CloudEclipse offers next-level cushioning, engineered to make your ride even smoother. Speedboard technology harnesses kinetic energy into more speed, through the power of smart tech.
Pros:
✅ Max cushion for long-distance training
✅ Insane bounce back for speedy miles
✅ Spacious fit (depending on feet)
Cons:
❌ Wide sizing not available
❌ Not the best option for overpronation
WH Tests It:
“This shoe stands out for its innovative design and unparalleled comfort, making it a top choice for runners of all levels. While many other shoes I tested excelled in specific areas – like wide toe box or stability – the Cloudeclipse delivers the perfect balance of performance, support and style. From the moment I slipped them on, I knew this was something special.
The first thing I noticed was the soft and supportive upper material. Once I hit the pavement, the CloudTec cushioning system truly came to life, providing a gentle but energising bounce with every stride. It’s the kind of cushioning that absorbs shock, helps propel you forward, and keeps your momentum strong. During my runs, the shoe strikes the perfect balance between softness and ground connection, offering stability without feeling bulky. While I typically gravitate toward shoes with a lower heel stack, the Cloudeclipse won me over with its comfortable yet responsive design that worked equally well for short jogs and longer runs.
That said, one small consideration is the fit of the toe box. While it’s perfectly fine for most runners, those with wider feet (like me) might find it slightly snug, especially on longer runs when feet tend to swell. It’s something to consider when making your selection, but it depends on your foot shape.” Tested by Nicolette Accardi, personal trainer and Fitness Commerce Editor at Women’s Health.

PUMA Velocity NITRO™ 4 Running Shoes
Best For: All-round versatility

This is the do-it-all shoe. The Velocity Nitro 4 is light, bouncy and versatile – comfy enough for easy runs, yet springy enough to help you when you pick up the pace. It’s a strong choice if you only want one pair to do it all, because it covers a bit of everything without being overwhelming.
Pros:
✅ Lightweight
✅ Versatile
✅ Good value
Cons:
❌ Neutral shoe – not ideal if you overpronate
WH Tests It:
“Sometimes it feels like social media tells you, you need 8 different pairs of running shoes for every type of run you could possibly do. And while it does help to match your run to your shoes – for the average runner (and when your Rands don’t stretch that far) it’s really not all that necessary. These shoes are super lightweight shoes and the breathable, close-to-skin fit makes you feel like you’re basically barefoot – a serious win for running in summer. They were designed to cover every type of runner and run and yes, I’ve found they deliver on that in spades.” Tested by Kelleigh Korevaar, Managing Editor.
Women’s UA Infinite Elite 2 Running Shoes
Best For: Endurance and cushioning

The UA Infinite Elite 2 is designed for building endurance. With the newest UA HOVR+ cushioning tech underfoot, this shoe delivers a springy, responsive feel that keeps your legs feeling fresh for longer. Whether you’re logging slow, steady miles or prepping for race day, this one’s built for reliable performance and lasting comfort.
Pros:
✅ Luxuriously cushioned
✅ Supportive over long distances
Cons:
❌ Slightly heavier than some long-distance rivals
WH Tests It
“At first, the upper feels a bit firm – but once you lace up, the tongue and collar wrap comfortably around your foot without adding pressure. My feet are on the narrow side, but there’s plenty of room if you have a wider fit. The upper is mostly mesh, which keeps things breathable and light. Overall, it’s a solid choice if you’re a neutral runner looking for cushioning that’ll take you through longer distances.” Tested by Chamain van Zyl, Online Editor.
Asics Gel-Kayano 32
Best For: Stability and support

If you’re worried about your ankles rolling in or need extra support, the Kayano 32 has your back (and your ankles). It’s a stability shoe designed to guide your stride and keep you steady, without feeling clunky. Perfect for beginners who want structure and cushioning in one package. Just note: it’s not the lightest or fastest shoe, but it will keep you feeling secure.
Pros:
✅ Excellent support
✅ Reliable cushioning
Cons:
❌ On the heavy side
❌ Not built for speed
WH Tests It
“Since finding out I overpronate when I run (and as an incredibly clumsy person), these have become my go-to pair. They provide the support and stability I need in order to run longer and without issue. When I first started wearing them, they felt firmer than what I was used to but after a few runs that subsided.” Tested by Kelleigh Korevaar, Managing Editor.
Hoka Bondi 9
Best For: Maximum comfort

Hoka’s most cushioned road shoe yet, built with a significantly higher stack height and super-critical EVA foam that absorbs impact and delivers a soft, bouncy ride. Designed to reduce stress on joints, this shoe is all about comfort – no matter how far you run.
Pros:
✅ Plush cushioning
✅ Wide, stable base
Cons:
❌ The chunky build can feel bulky for runners who prefer a more stripped-back shoe
WH Tests It
“This one’s a real workhorse. From the moment you slip them on, they feel so lightweight it’s almost like you’re wearing nothing – but once you start running, the cushioning and energy return are incredible. The high stack gives you a subtle boost with every stride. If you’re chasing comfort and want a neutral shoe that can go the distance, this is a brilliant option. But if you prefer a stripped-back, low-profile trainer, this might feel a bit much.” Tested by Chamain van Zyl, Online Editor.
Brooks Glycerin GTS 22
Best For: Marathon training

This women’s running shoe features Brooks’ innovative GuideRails™ support system that keeps you comfortably in your stride while tuned nitrogen in the midsole provides plush landings and responsive toe-offs.
Pros:
✅ Bouncy cushioning
✅ Spacious toe box with wide sizing available
Cons:
❌ Better for neutral arches
WH Tests It
“The Brooks Glycerin GTS 22 is one of my favourite shoes for its comfort and support that can tackle the demands of marathon training and other long-distance goals. Like the previous edition, the heel stack and heel-to-toe drop stand out for helping me settle into a rhythm early on during runs – the bouncy cushioning makes hitting and maintaining my stride much easier while sparing my knees from impact. The padding around the heels also feels like an extra layer of support and reduces any chance of blisters (ouch).
Similar to New Balance Fresh Foam x 1080v14, the wide toe box provides more room for toes to spread naturally, which makes a huge difference in comfort as I run. Whether I land on my toes or heels, the shoe feels supportive and adaptable.” Tested by Nicolette Accardi, personal trainer and Fitness Commerce Editor at Women’s Health US.

Reebok FloatZig Symmetros
Best For: Recovery and long runs

Engineered for comfort without compromise, the FloatZig Symmetros is built for those longer efforts where you need support, cushioning and durability in equal measure. It offers a soft, plush feel underfoot with enhanced heel support and energy return, making it a reliable choice for high-mileage training or recovery days.
Pros:
✅ Light enough for race day but cushioned for training
Cons:
❌ Slightly firmer feel than some may like for longer recovery runs
WH Tests It
“I’ve always preferred Reebok, adidas and Nike because their fit just works for my narrower feet – and this shoe is no exception. It hugs your foot in place but still allows for natural movement. The upper is breathable and the geometry foam midsole gives great energy return without feeling overly soft. They’re perfect if you like a firmer ride with plenty of support for longer or back-to-back runs.” Tested by Chamain van Zyl, Online Editor.
