As of the time of writing, there are precisely 71 days to go until our South African athletes fly the flag and represent the country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Every competitive athlete has the event firmly in their sights and is working hard to put their best efforts forward. Read on to see the South African female athletes at the 2024 Olympics.
On the 15th of May 2024, The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) announced the first of three parts of the team set to jet off to the Games.
When are the 2024 Olympics?
The 2024 Olympics are set to take place in Paris, from 26 July to 11 August 2024. South Africa will participate for the ninth time since its return to the world stage in 1992.
Where can South Africans watch the 2024 Olympics?
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded exclusive broadcast rights to DStv SuperSport, Econet Media and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for the 2024 Olympic Games. Added to that, the Olympic Channel will be showing past and live events, which can be accessed online.

Field Hockey

The women’s hockey team sealed their Olympic ticket when they beat Nigeria by a nine-goal margin in the finals at the qualifying games, securing a gold medal for the tournament at the same time.

Rugby 7’s

The women’s team is set to make their first-ever Olympics appearance after securing their spot at the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens regional qualifying tournament.
Gymnastics

Talented gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz recorded a historic 19th place finish at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium – securing herself a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Surfing

As the top-ranked South African female surfer, Sarah Baum is in for an exciting time at the 2024 Olympics. Teahupo’o, a legendary surfing village on the southwestern coast of the island of Tahiti, will play host to all surfing events.
Climbing

Lauren Mukheibir will join Gqeberha’s Aniya Holder. The duo will represent the country in sport climbing.
Diving

Julia Vincent is in full-on prep mode after bagging her ticket to Paris at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Japan.

Swimming

Swimming star Tatjana Smith (nee Schoenmaker) secured her place in Paris with impressive times at the 2024 South African National Championships. Joining her at the Games are Kaylene Corbett, Rebecca Meder, Aimee Canny and Erin Gallagher.
Long-distance running

Three women have bagged their spot: five-time record-breaking champion Gerda Steyn will fly the flag, along with powerhouses Irvette van Zyl and Cian Oldknow.
Hurdles

Marione Fourie holds the national record for high hurdles and is a multiple-time national champion in the event. As such, she’ll be representing the country in high hurdles, hoping for a finals finish come July. Joining her is 400m hurdles athlete Rogail Joseph as well as Zeney Geldenhuys, who competes in both 400m hurdles and the 400m sprint.

Middle-distance running

Prudence Sekgodiso secured her spot in the 800m race at the Olympics and in doing so, became the second-fastest South African woman in that discipline. Caster Semenya is the first.
Canoeing

Tiffany Koch and Esti Olivier have secured their spot at the Games. The pair won a tense match-up at the SA Championships at Victoria Lake in Germiston to claim their position.
Javelin throw

While as yet unconfirmed, Jo-Ané van Dyk is all but a shoo-in at the 2024 Olympic Games. A four-time national champion and the reigning 2024 All Africa Games Champion, she recently broke a 21-year-old USSA record for javelin throw. She shot the stick an impressive distance of 62.70m, breaking the record set by South African Olympic silver medallist Sunette Viljoen.
Badminton

South Africa’s sole representative in Badminton, Johanita Scholtz qualified has for the Games. It comes after the 24-year-old defended her title as the women’s singles badminton back-to-back African Games champion in March.
Cycling

A sign of how the sport is growing successfully in SA, four female athletes will represent the rainbow nation in cycling. They are Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (road), Tiffany Keep (road), Candice Lill (MTB) and Miyanda Maseti (BMX).
Triathlon

The Stellenbosch-based triathlete will be the only female competing for South Africa in the discipline at the Games. Vicky van der Merwe already bagged gold at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana this year. She also won the 2024 Africa Triathlon Cup in Swakopmund in Namibia.
