What he should do before you start trying to conceive

Get in shape. Obesity affects men’s fertility too. A study in Epidemiology found that couples were 10 percent more likely to have trouble conceiving when the male had a BMI higher than 25.

Clean up his lifestyle. “Tobacco, marijuana and alcohol are potentially toxic to sperm,” says reproductive medicine specialist Dr Saleema Nosarka.

See a doctor. Keeping his body healthy will help keep his sperm in top shape too.

What he should do when you’re ready to fall pregnant

Let his boys hang loose. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, overheating the testicular area can affect sperm count. So ask him to wear boxers, skip the sauna and get a laptop pad (or keep his laptop off his lap) during the baby-making phase.

Cut back on cycling. Your guy may want to switch to a less, um, ball-busting sport. A recent study showed that men who ride mountain bikes 4800km a year (that’s less than just an hour a day, four days a week, if your guy cycles at an average speed of 25km/h) had a much higher rate of testicular injuries, which may harm fertility.
