Faux lashes, or false eyelashes, add length and volume to natural lashes, offering a fuller, more dramatic look. They come in various styles, materials, and application methods, including strip lashes and individual lashes, and require proper care and removal to avoid damage and irritation.
Traditionally, false eyelashes are applied in strips or individual sections with a temporary adhesive to the eyelid. They are meant to be worn for a few hours at a time and should be safely removed before sleeping. Recently, more options for false eyelashes have become popular, one being magnetic lashes. These are temporary—like those with adhesive—and are either applied using a magnetic eyeliner on the eyelid or a double layer of eyelashes that stick together at the base.
Another option is eyelash extensions, which are meant to last three to four weeks at a time. Eyelash extensions are typically made of mink or silk and are applied to the base of each natural lash with a semi-permanent glue. Strip lashes, for instance, are pre-made, full strips of lashes that are glued along the lash line. Individual lashes, on the other hand, are single lashes that are applied individually to the lash line. Because they’re essentially a get-up-and-go hairstyle that doesn’t require mascara, careful care needs to be considered when wearing the long term option.

Lash Safety
False eyelashes are generally safe, but there are a few risks to be aware of before applying them. “The adhesive used in temporary false eyelashes isn’t regulated by the FDA, so you don’t always know what’s in it,” warns Dr. Armstrong. Some people may have an unknown allergy or sensitivity to the adhesive. If you’re looking for a salon to apply eyelash extensions, make sure you choose somewhere reputable. Ask for the aesthetician’s training experience and certifications, observe their sterilisation procedures and do a skin test of the adhesive before application of the lashes.
Precision Over Speed
Keep in mind that extensions take time, because they should be applied to the base of each lash individually. If a lash extension is glued to a clump of lashes instead of a single lash, it can result in a fracture of the natural lashes. Dr. Armstrong advises, “Be sceptical of salons that offer a very low price or quick turnaround time.” When applying false eyelashes, you should take care in using instruments around your eye. There is a risk of trauma to the eyelid or cornea if you’re not careful, and if you manage to poke yourself in the eye, it can result in broken blood vessels or other injuries. In addition, eyelashes can fall out and get stuck beneath the eyelid, scratching the surface of the eye.

Healthy Lashes Need Breaks Too
Be sure to take breaks from wearing false eyelashes. If worn too long or too often, they can cause permanent lash loss by damaging the follicles. Dr. Armstrong says, “The safest way to wear false eyelashes is in moderation. Most problems occur when you wear them for months and months.” Your natural lashes also need breaks from long-lasting eyelash extensions. It’s recommended that you not get them wet, as it can be difficult to maintain proper eye hygiene while wearing them. When you’re removing lashes, it’s important to never rip them off. Wait for them to fall off on their own or help dissolve the glue with a hot shower and an oil-free makeup remover.
Dos and Don’ts of Faux Lash Care
To care for faux lashes, do clean them regularly with a gentle, oil-free cleanser, avoid mascara and sleep on your back. Don’t get them wet for the first 24-48 hours, use oil-based products, or rip them off, instead opting for gentle removal with makeup remover. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the dos and don’ts of faux lash care from Joburg-based lash technician Nimisha Govender.
Dos
- Clean your lashes regularly. Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove makeup and debris, keeping your lashes clean and preventing buildup.
- Avoid mascara. Mascara can damage faux lashes and prevent them from lasting as long.
- Sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side or stomach can cause friction and pressure, leading to lash distortion or premature shedding.
- Use lash serum. A lash serum can help to promote healthy lash growth, making your natural lashes stronger and able to support faux lashes better.
- Brush your lashes regularly. Use a lash brush to keep your lashes fluffy and untangled.
- Be gentle around your eyes. Avoid rubbing or pulling on your eyes, as this can damage your faux lashes and the delicate skin around your eyes.
- Refill your lashes regularly. Regular fills will help to maintain the look and longevity of your faux lashes.
- Use oil-free makeup removers. Oil-based makeup removers can weaken the adhesive and cause lashes to come off prematurely.
- Use water-based makeup. Water-based makeup is less likely to damage the adhesive than waterproof makeup.
- Avoid extreme heat. Excessive heat can soften the adhesive and cause lashes to fall out prematurely.
Donts
- Get your lashes wet. Avoid getting your lashes wet for the first 24-48 hours after application, and be cautious about getting them wet in general.
- Use oil-based products. Oil-based products can break down the adhesive and cause lashes to fall out prematurely.
- Rub your eyes. Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can damage your faux lashes and the delicate skin around your eyes.
- Rip off your lashes. Never rip off your faux lashes, as this can damage your natural lashes.
- Share your lashes. Never share your faux lashes with others, as this can lead to the spread of bacteria and infections.
- Apply mascara to your faux lashes. Avoid applying mascara to your faux lashes, as it can damage them and prevent them from lasting as long.
- Sleep on your face. Sleeping on your face can cause friction and pressure, leading to lash distortion or premature shedding.
