How To Apply And Remove Glitter Polish – Without Destroying Your Nails!

A very sparkly DIY

Let’s be honest here – as grown adult women we all love love love sparkly things! And when the sun goes down it actually becomes socially acceptable to breakout the sequins and the glittery makeup. Often the best way to rock the look, without looking like a Christmas decoration, is with a killer shimmery mani.

But man… it sure is a mission to get right! It comes out patchy, sticky, gloopy and take hours to dry. But then we stumbled upon this life-changing tutorial from vlogger, Kelli Marissa.

According to Kelli, this is what you need to create mega sparkles:

A good base coat
Liquid latex (optional, but recommended).
A glitter polish
A cosmetic sponge.
A high-shine top coat

Step 1
Apply your base coat as normal.

Step 2
Apply the liquid latex on the skin around your nail so that it won’t get covered in glitter.

Step 3
Now apply your glitter polish to the edge of your sponge.

Step 4
Dab the sponge on your nail (yes, really).

Step 5
Peel off the latex and apply your top coat. Voila! Amazing glitter nails.

But there is a downside to all the shimmer. If you’ve ever applied glitter polish you’ll know that it’s almost next to impossible to remove. Which means by the next day when you’re over all the sparkles, you’re pretty much stuck scraping and peeling those tips for the next week. Urgh. The result? Mangled nail beds.

Turns out, there’s a reason why this type of polish is so damn difficult to wipe off. It’s because unlike regular polish, glitter-based lacquers are textured and ‘stick’ to both your nail bed and the cotton pad when you try and remove your mani. The trick to nixing it the correct way is to let your nail polish remover settle on the nail so that it can loosen those top glitter flecks. To do this, soak a cotton pad in nail polish remover, press it over your nail, then wrap the tip of your finger with tin foil. Repeat on all 10 fingers. Leave on for around 2 minutes, then remove. Once all evidence of glitter is gone, dab on some cuticle oil (nail polish remover can have a drying effect).

‘Tis the season to sparkle, after all!
