If rum cake, mince pies and a generous pour of bubbles are already on the menu, these mocktails are simply a fresh addition to the festive table. They’re perfect for the hostess who loves to offer something a little different – whether that’s alongside cocktails or as a stand-alone serve.
Wellness-minded South Africans have been trading sugary coolers and heavy cocktails for spirit-free options that are clean, vibrant and sophisticated. And it’s pushed mocktails into an entirely new league.
Fresh Ingredients, Better Flavour
When alcohol isn’t doing the heavy lifting, flavour has to come from the ingredients. “If you’re not relying on alcohol for complexity, freshness has to lead,” says Tymon Minnaar, Brand Manager at Rugani Juice. “Start with produce that’s juiced the same day it’s harvested and the flavour speaks for itself. You get natural integrity – then it’s easy to elevate it with ice, fragrant herbs and fizz to create a drink with real character.”
Why The Base Matters
That freshness is central to how Rugani approaches juice. The brand grows, harvests and juices its own produce, taking it from farm to bottle within 24 hours using its locally developed Greenway Inside™ process. The gentle extraction method helps preserve natural colour, flavour and nutrients.
Rugani is also the only juice brand in South Africa endorsed by CANSA as a Smart Choice, which makes it an easy pick for festive hosting. Add in naturally occurring benefits like pineapple juice with up to three times more vitamin C than similar products, and carrot juice that’s rich in beta-carotene, and you’ve got mocktail bases that feel as good as they taste.
How To Build A Mocktail Like A Pro
- Start with 100% vegetable or fruit juice. Freshly juiced within 24 hours tastes noticeably brighter and needs fewer sweeteners.
- Think like a chef. Sweet, sour, aromatic and texture. If a drink tastes flat, add acid (lemon or lime).
- Herbs are aromatic. Bruise lightly to release oils.
- Ice is an ingredient. Loads of clear, hard ice keeps dilution steady and the drink crisp.
- Glassware tells the story. Flutes for spritzers, rocks for short sips, highballs for fizz.
- Garnish with intention. If it’s not on the rim, it should earn its place in the glass
