What Is Gorpcore Style?
If your local mountains and trails are starting to resemble futuristic runways, there’s a reason: Gorpcore. This outdoorsy aesthetic blends function with fashion: think technical gear that performs on rocky routes, city streets and high-fashion runways alike.
Knowledge Boost: The name Gorpcore comes from an acronym for the popular trail mix snack, Good Old Raisins and Peanuts (a.k.a G.O.R.P.).

How Do You Define Gorpcore?
Sabrina: Gorpcore has really grown over the past few years since I started posting and working for Arc’teryx [a Canadian outdoor apparel and equipment brand]. When I first saw it in marketing, it felt like an extreme version of technical hiking gear.
As it’s evolved, it’s become something different. The community boards that helped me gain reach early on were focused on layering technical gear for expedition-level adventures. Now, it feels much more community-focused and accessible.
Beyond the inspiration we draw from books like Dune or films like Star Wars, the core idea is to get outside and have fun. For me, gorpcore is the perfect blend of sci-fi fashion and outdoor adventure – and that’s exactly how I feel about it!
How Did You Become The “Queen Of Gorpcore”?

Sabrina: I’ve always loved hiking, even though I grew up somewhere with no mountains – but the urge for adventure was always there. When I was 17, I left home and spent every summer working in British Columbia as a tree planter. That’s really when I fell in love with the mountains and hiking.
I remember my first time driving through the mountains – my face was glued to the car window because I couldn’t believe how high the ground was!
As I started working for Arc’teryx and collecting more technical gear, I also nurtured my love for fashion and creating unique looks. I began sewing thrifted pieces and taking photos on every hike. After a while, being reposted on several gorpcore pages on Instagram earned me the title “gorpcore queen.” I didn’t even know what I was doing, but it felt like I was finally finding the perfect balance between bold fashion statements and my love for the outdoors.
Where’s The Best Place To Start With Building A Functional, Fashionable Collection?
Sabrina: INVEST AND FOCUS ON FABRIC! This was the biggest lesson I learned early on. I knew quality technical gear could be pricey, but I wasn’t willing to sacrifice safety for fashion while hiking.
When I started working at Arc’teryx, I saw firsthand how high-quality garments can literally be life or death in alpine environments. I realised that well-made pieces with top-notch fabrics would always stand the test of time.
I began thrifting old shirts and sweaters made of 100% merino wool or water-resistant pants and sewing them into pieces with a higher fashion edge. Combining technical knowledge with sewing skills turned out to be the perfect mix.

What’s More Important – Performance Or Style?
Sabrina: Performance should always come first. Luckily, in 2025, brands are really embracing style and function – perfectly combining the two.
Some of my favourites, like Salomon, Peak Performance, Arc’teryx and Vivobarefoot, are absolute masters at this. Whether it’s designing the best lightweight Gore-Tex shell or creating barefoot shoes that improve foot health and mobility, they’ve nailed the basics.
Now, they have the freedom to focus on crafting beautiful pieces with unique colours and textures – making gear that’s not just functional, but visually exciting too!

What’s The Secret To Creating Iconic Looks Without Looking Like You’re Hiking Mt. Kili?
Sabrina: Accessories! This is probably the category I own the widest variety of. I keep a smaller collection of garments with a similar colour story, which makes mixing and matching super easy. It’s also easier on my wallet because these higher-quality pieces are built to last – meaning I don’t need a lot of them, and with proper care, they can easily last 10 years or more.
That’s where accessories come in – they’re perfect for having fun and adding a pop of colour or a bold design. Some of my Oakley sunglasses have cool shapes or a red-and-black zebra print on the sides. Paired with a brightly coloured hat and an all-black outfit, it’s an easy way to channel serious style icon vibes!

How Do You Layer Hiking Clothes Like A Pro?
Sabrina: AHH! This is my favourite question! I always get teased for layering “too much,” but if you do it right, it’s not only super comfortable – it helps keep you cool and protects your skin from sun damage.
I always start with a base layer made from merino wool or sweat-wicking fabric. It helps regulate your temperature and keeps you dry.
Then I think about the elements:
- If it’s cold and wet, I go for a synthetic insulation layer.
- If it’s cold and dry, I’ll reach for a down layer instead.
Breathability is key! You don’t need down under your armpits – so I like pieces that mix in mesh or breathable synthetics in areas that trap heat.
Next, I always pack a windbreaker or Gore-Tex shell. Mountain weather can shift fast, and you’ll be so glad you brought it.
And finally – accessories! A hat is great for sun protection and catching sweat. Sunglasses are a must. And sometimes, just for fun, I’ll add a little stuffed bag charm to my pack. It always boosts my mood, especially when the hike gets tough!

What’s Your Style Hack For Mixing Gorpcore Pieces with Streetwear Or Different Styles?
Sabrina: Such a great question! I think the key is not putting yourself in a box. If you love two styles that seem totally opposite, don’t feel like you have to choose just one.
Growing up with two sisters and no brothers, I’ve always loved being girly – but I also loved being outside. Hiking and camping didn’t mean I had to lose that part of myself.
The real style hack? Stop seeing your closet as categories for different activities. Instead, look at it as one big collection to mix and match from. Pair pieces you wouldn’t normally put together – that’s where the fun and personal style really starts.
Style should be playful, not serious. So enjoy it and make it yours!

What’s The Next Big Trend In Outdoor Fashion Going To Be?
Sabrina: Trends are a tricky topic in the outdoor space – part of me hopes there isn’t one. I’d love to see brands focus more on what truly sets them apart, rather than chasing what everyone else is doing.
Trends can sometimes lead to copying or this pressure to follow a certain direction just to stay relevant. But when a brand leans into creating unique, individual pieces that reflect their identity, that’s when they really stand out.

What Are The Gorpcore Essentials You Can’t Live Without?

Sabrina: Such a good question! I’d have to start with my Peak Performance Helium Puffer – I have it in three colours because it’s my go-to summit layer. It’s warm, super lightweight, and I love that they created the Flo Series using upcycled jackets, which makes each one colourful and unique.
Next up is my emergency shell – an absolute must for any hike. Even if I don’t end up wearing it, I’m always glad I brought it. The Trailblazer HIPE jacket and pants from Peak Performance are my ride-or-die for lightweight HIPE® protection. The fabric is fully waterproof, breathable and easy to pack.
And finally, I can’t hike without my Vivobarefoot boots. I injured my knee a while back, and switching to barefoot shoes has made a huge difference in my recovery and overall balance. My top picks are the Jungle Boots, Tracker Textile and for post-hike comfort, I’m always slipping into the Tracker Sandals.

Any Adventures On Your Bucket List?
Sabrina: Always! And honestly, the list just keeps getting longer the more I research.
Two of my biggest bucket list adventures right now are:
First, hiking through the interior of Iceland – there’s a 5-day trek along the Laugavegur Trail that I’ve been dreaming about. I actually did a cycling tour around the Ring Road about 8 years ago, and it was such an unforgettable adventure. I can’t wait to go back this August!
Another one I’m super stoked for is hiking in the Dolomites. I’ve always wanted to explore more of Italy on foot, and I’ll finally be heading there this September!

Your Favourite Outdoor Adventure You’ve Been On?
Sabrina: Honestly, it has to be the adventures I take right here in British Columbia. I’m constantly reminded of how special this place is – the landscapes never stop surprising me. Whether it’s waterfalls, glaciers, baby blue lakes, towering ferns or jagged mountain peaks, there’s just so much beauty packed into one province.
Plus, I get to bring my dog and my friends along for the ride, which always makes any adventure 10x better.
