It’s time to get acquainted with the emojis panel on your phone — your sex life depends on it.

We all have that friend who peppers every text with an abundance of emojis — and sometimes we roll our eyes in response. The next time you receive one of these texts, try to control your exacerbation and instead take a leaf out of the sender’s book — it could help your sex life. Research conducted by online dating site Match.com has found that the more emojis people use, the more sex they are likely to have.

According to the site’s annual Singles in America survey, in which just over 5 600 people in their 20s, 30s and 40s were polled, 54 percent of people who used emojis had sex at least monthly in 2014 compared to 31 percent who didn’t. “Emoji users don’t just have more sex, they go on more dates and they are two times more likely to want to get married,” Dr Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist at Rutgers University who helped lead the study, tells TIME. “Sixty two percent of emoji users want to get married compared to 30 percent of people who never used an emoji… That’s pretty good.”

In our tech-driven world where cellphones have basically become an extension of our bodies and actual telephone calls are quickly becoming taboo, instant messaging is only growing — WhatsApp recorded 1.2 billion monthly users in January 2017. As we all know, getting your tone and emotion across in a message is extremely difficult, but emojis are a solution to the problem. “[Emoji users] want to give their texts more personality,” Fisher explains to TIME. “Here we have a new technology that absolutely jeopardises your ability to express your emotion… There is no more subtle inflection of the voice… And so we have created another way to express emotions and that is the emoji.”

The researchers also found a correlation between the number of emojis used and the amount of sex had — i.e. more emojis equals more sex! Plus, according to TIME, us girls need to use kiss-related emojis more often since women who do tend to achieve orgasm more easily with a familiar partner. Who knew a simple emoji could be so powerful?

So, next time you want to send a text, sprinkle in a few emojis (if it’s to your crush, why not use a few aubergines and kissing faces) and prepare yourself for all the sex!
