When we think of hiking, camping or anything outdoors, the first things that spring to mind are fresh air, panoramic views and zero signal. But just because you’re roughing it doesn’t mean your skincare has to. Whether you’re trekking the Drakensberg, taking on the Otter Trail, or heading out on a multi-day mountain escape, these beauty essentials will keep your skin (and your sanity) in check. Bonus: they won’t take up much space in your pack.
Sunscreen
Even when it’s cloudy. Even if you’re under a cap. Even on snow-covered peaks. UV rays still get through and exposure at high altitudes is even more intense – UV radiation increases about 10-12% for every 1000m in elevation.
Daily sunscreen use can prevent premature ageing, reduce hyperpigmentation and significantly lower your risk of skin cancer, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation. A tinted version is a great multitasker – it evens out your complexion, protects your skin and saves packing space.
Tip: Go for SPF 30+ minimum, broad-spectrum and reapply every 2 hours if you’re sweating.

Micellar Make-up Wipes
Dirt, sunscreen, sweat, grime – your face takes a beating on the trail. That’s where micellar makeup wipes come in. They’re soaked in tiny cleansing molecules (called micelles) that attract oil, dirt and makeup like a magnet – no rinse needed.

Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a backpacker’s best friend – especially if your hair gets greasy fast or you’re not washing it daily (because who is when there’s no hot shower in sight?). It absorbs excess oil, adds volume and leaves your hair smelling fresh.

Deodorant Wipes Or Roll-On Deodorant
When baby wipes won’t cut it, deodorant wipes or a deo roll-on can help you stay fresh on the trail. A good tip is to apply antiperspirant before bed. The active ingredients – usually aluminium salts – work by temporarily blocking sweat glands, and they’re more effective when applied at night, as your body is cooler and sweating less. This allows the formula to absorb properly and continue working the next day, even after a quick rinse.

Lip Balm (With SPF)
Chapped, cracked lips are painful and seriously un-cute. High altitudes, dry air and sun exposure strip your lips of moisture, and your lips have no oil glands to naturally protect themselves.
Tip: Vaseline or balm can also be used on chafing spots, dry cuticles or even brows.

Hair Ties & Clips
They will disappear. And you will wish you packed more. Having a few trusty ties, bobby pins or a claw clip can be a game-changer when your neck’s sweating under layers of hair or the wind’s howling.

Multi-Stick For Cheeks, Eyes And Lips
You might not think make-up matters when you’re hiking, but a swipe of multi-stick blush or lip tint can instantly lift your mood and your face. These creamy colour balms are lightweight, super portable and give you that post-hike glow before you hit the summit.

Waterproof Mascara
Okay, it’s not an “essential” essential – but if fluttery lashes make you feel more you, pack a waterproof mascara that won’t smudge through sweat, rain or spontaneous dips in the pools.
