Tyla On The Self-Care Routine That Keeps Her At The Top Of Her Game

by | May 23, 2024 | Cover Star

From wanting a bigger bum but being unwilling to do squats [chuckles] to missing her mom’s food, the world’s favourite pop sensation right now – Tyla if we must spell it out for ya – shared some of the self-care practices that keep her grounded. Given her arduous travel schedule, and the fact that she’s abroad more often than she’s home these days, Tyla notes the importance of being in tip-top shape mentally in order to bring her best self to the stage. We recently caught up with the 22-year-old to find out how she keeps it real and handles self-care, amidst all eyes being on her. Below is what she had to say.

How do you unwind? I’m surrounded by people a lot of the time and it can become a bit much sometimes. So, I love my alone time. I love taking long baths or showers, with some candles burning and music in the background.

What keeps your mental health in tip-top shape? I’m not a fan of talking to people so it’s usually me and God. I’m always praying and speaking to Him when I’m stressed – and that brings me peace.

What music gets you into relaxation mode? Live jazz mixes on YouTube, amapiano producer Kelvin Momo’s albums – or on some days I just want to vibe and hype myself up [chuckles]. My choice in music depends on my mood, really!

Best exercise. I love to dance. When I’m preparing for a show, we’ll schedule a week of dance rehearsals that last up to two hours or more. I’m pretty active in that sense! I also enjoy working doing group pilates, lifting weights, going for a walk and hiking. These help take me out of work mode.

Worst exercise. I hate squats, oh my gosh! I want a big bum but not that badly [chuckles].

Best time to exercise. I prioritise exercise over everything. I’m learning that I can always make time for myself and my body. Usually when I travel, I like staying at a hotel with a gym closeby or one with a gym on its premises.

Best foods. I like a light breakfast because I hate feeling heavy in the morning. I usually have chia pudding or jungle oats or bacon/sausage and bread for breakfast. And oh, a ginger shot is a must – it wakes me up! I’m not big on lunch but when I do have a moment to sit down, I like a wrap or sandwich. Supper is where I go in hard with a warm meal, usually pasta or a stew with rice. Throughout the day, I snack on either cashews, seaweed or pistachios.

Foods I miss when travelling. Boerewors, biltong, pap and my mom’s food!
