The words ‘viral’ and ‘sex position’ might (rightly) spark fear in your mind – but we’ve come across a trending sex position that you should legitimately consider adding to your repertoire: prone bone.

Searches on Google for ‘prone bone’ are on the rise and for good reason: the position is a fun twist on doggy-style and other penetration-from-behind positions. According to a 2023 Between Us Clinic survey – in which 43 sex experts got to weigh in – spooning, missionary, doggy, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, butterfly, missionary with a wedge/pillow the coital alignment technique, lotus and passive doggy were among the most-loved sex positions.

If you’re a fan of the doggy style (as it features twice above), then you might love the prone bone sex position.

What is the prone bone sex position?

Hint: ‘prone’ means lying face down and ‘bone’ is short for ‘boning’ which means, well, you know. To be more descriptive, the prone bone sex position is a position for penetrative sex in which the receiver is lying face down and the penetrator lies on top of them. “Think, collapsed doggy-style,” says Samantha Marshall, head of brand at Smile Makers.

“In the prone bone position, one partner lies flat on their belly whilst the other lies on top, vaginally or anally penetrating them. It’s perfect for those that enjoy penetrative stimulation with a penis or a strap-on.”

Why you should try the prone bone sex position?

While some people call prone bone a ‘lazy’ variation of doggy, “I say it’s energy-saving – be that because you’re tired but horny or wanting a long and slow sex session,” says Marshall.

Deep penetration

“Internal stimulation is about way more than fast thrusting and this position might encourage smaller, but deeper motions,” says Marshall.

G-spot

“For receivers with vulvas, the angle can hit the G-zone – an area that contacts the clitoral structure – and can feel super satisfying.”

Enhancing intimacy

“You may not be able to look into each other’s eyes, but whispering sweet nothings and neck kisses can be a real turn-on that you don’t get to do as much in other positions.”

New erogenous zones

“Prone bone puts the spotlight on a whole new surface area of erogenous potential: the back. Pressing against or being pressed against is a new sensation to try. Plus, before fully committing to the position, you can build arousal by tickling and teasing the back with a tongue or vibrator.”

Anal stimulation

“This position is an opportunity to try anal penetration or double-penetration – something over 27% of people say is very pleasurable. It is easy for your partner to see and touch or insert a butt plug gently, and when they press against you it will help it stay in place.”

Exploring pelvic sensations

“Each partner can take note of what it feels like to change leg position – when legs are tightly closed, slightly open, or wide open. Trying these out together can up the playfulness and make you feel more connected to what’s going on with your bodies.”

What to be aware of before trying the prone bone sex position

Weight and positioning

“This position isn’t great for those of us that are weak-backed. One partner’s bodyweight is on top of the other so go slow and gentle if prone to back pain and listen to your body,” says Marshall. The penetrator can also place their arms on the surface surrounding the receiver to prop some of their weight up.

“As someone who has BRCA and has had preventative double-mastectomy with reconstruction, it might not feel totally comfortable on the chest for those that have had breast surgery,” adds Marshall. Similarly, those with large or sensitive breasts may not find the pronated position comfortable, so playing with positioning and weight distribution is important. “Tell the top partner if it feels uncomfortable – have a word or gesture to signal to them is good too,” says Marshall.

Clitoral stimulation

“Many people with vulvas need clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm and this position doesn’t allow much room for that. Make sure to mix it up – no one’s saying we stay in one position the whole time – or try slipping a flat-ish vibe between the bed and the bottom person’s clit.”

Lube up

“Some people don’t find penetration comfortable, but if you’re still wanting to experiment, use lube to decrease friction and hopefully increase pleasure.”

How to safely try the prone bone sex position

Marshall recommends the position begins in the classic doggy-style: the receiver should be in an all-fours position with the penetrator kneeling behind them. Then slowly ease yourselves into a layering positioning gently by lowering your upper-body and chest to the surface and extending your legs behind you. ‘Take time to find the most pleasurable position by angling the hips, using pillows to prop or spread the butt-cheeks to create more space,’ adds Marshall.
