It’s not hard to see how the humble hamburger became everybody’s ultimate comfort food. With minimal effort (and ingredients), you can cook a patty that’s immeasurably better than drive-through fare. Try one of these homemade gourmet burgers this weekend.

Salmon Burger With Grilled Romaine Heart And Lemon Yoghurt Sauce
Ingredients
- 340g salmon fillet
- 1 tsp fresh rosemary finely chopped
- ⅓ cup panko
- 1 egg white
- 2 tsp lemon zest
Instructions
- Cut salmon into pieces and blend in a food processor for one minute. Combine in a medium bowl with remaining ingredients and form into four patties.
- Braai for four to five minutes, flip, then braai for another four to five minutes. Top each patty with one-eighth grilled romaine heart and two tablespoons lemon yoghurt.
SERVES 4. Per serving: 690kJ, 6g fat (1g sat), 6g carbs, 295mg sodium, 1g fibre, 21g protein

Turkey And Grilled Peaches Burger
Ingredients
- 340g ground turkey
- 2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
- 2 Tbsp shallot finely minced
- 2 Tbsp fresh parsley chopped
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and form into four patties. Braai for five to six minutes, then flip and braai for another five to six minutes, or until burgers reach an internal temperature of 75°C.
- To serve, top each patty with half a sliced grilled peach.

Ostrich Burger With Grilled Guacamole
Ingredients
- 340g ostrich mince
- ½ cup onion chopped
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp paprika
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and form into four patties. Braai for five to six minutes, then flip and braai for another five to six minutes, or until burgers reach an internal temperature of 70°C.
- To serve, top each patty with two tablespoons grilled guacamole.
